UAE Blocks 13,667 Copyright Infringing Websites in Q1 2026

The UAE is stepping up digital copyright enforcement, and the latest figures show how quickly online piracy is being targeted.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism said 13,667 violating websites were blocked during the first quarter of 2026 as part of the InstaBlock initiative. According to WAM, that was nearly 400 percent higher than the same period last year.

The campaign focuses on websites linked to copyright infringement in creative content and digital broadcasting. This includes unauthorised access to protected content, especially during high demand viewing periods such as Ramadan.

The ministry said the InstaBlock initiative uses artificial intelligence for real time monitoring and faster processing of copyright infringement reports. Since the InstaBlock Lab was launched in February 2025, a total of 47,667 violating websites have been blocked.

The effort was carried out in coordination with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority and several industry stakeholders. WAM also reported that immediate website blocks during Ramadan rose sharply, from 62 sites in 2023 to 5,677 in 2026.

For users, the message is simple. Copyrighted content should be accessed through official and licensed platforms. Piracy websites can also expose users to unsafe pop ups, suspicious downloads, fake payment pages, and other online security risks.

For media companies, streaming services, creators, and digital platforms, stronger copyright enforcement supports a safer content market. It also shows how AI is being used to detect and act on digital violations more quickly.

The numbers also show that copyright enforcement in the UAE is becoming more active and more automated, while supporting the country’s broader digital economy goals.
