New research from LinkedIn, based on a Censuswide survey of 625 UAE-based professionals conducted between July 20 and August 10, 2026, found that 91% plan to continue living and working in the UAE over the next six to 12 months, with 66% saying they definitely intend to stay. The same research found that 96% of respondents consider their professional network important as AI and rapid workplace change reshape their careers, while 74% said they always or often browse work-related content without actively participating. ### Why the Engagement Gap Exists The survey identified several barriers to more active networking. Around 42% of UAE professionals said they were unsure how to get started, while 41% said they did not know how to turn connections into meaningful relationships. Confidence was another factor. Some 40% worried about bothering people or wasting their time, and 33% worried about being judged. More than half, 58%, said they had not received enough guidance on building professional relationships or growing a network. At the same time, 86% said they would be likely to respond to or support someone seeking career help even if they did not know that person personally. That does not guarantee a response to every message, but it suggests that respectful professional outreach may be more welcome than hesitant users expect. ### Skills Still Lead, But Visibility Can Help In the same research, 39% of UAE professionals said having the right skills and experience gives them the strongest chance of accessing new opportunities. A strong professional network followed at 25%, while 23% pointed to online visibility. The survey also found that 42% said online professional communities had helped them increase their knowledge, while 41% said they had made a connection that supported their career. Skills remain the foundation, but professional relationships can help other people become aware of those skills. Najat Abdelhadi, Mena career expert at LinkedIn, said networking does not need to begin with a large request. According to the research, LinkedIn members who have interacted with a post from one of their connections are almost three times more likely to receive a connection request and almost five times more likely to receive a message. ### The Line Between Updating and Overstating A separate issue is the accuracy of professional profiles as people adapt them to changing demand for skills. A National Bureau of Economic Research working paper published in July 2026, using monthly snapshots of Revelio Labs data from 2020 to 2026, found that 19.7% of established U.S. LinkedIn users retroactively edited the title or description of a job they had already left. The researchers call these changes "time-travel" edits and found that they were closely associated with job transitions. The paper also documented a sharp post-2022 increase in AI-related language appearing in retroactive edits. CNBC reported that researchers identified AI-related terms being added to roles dating back to 2012\. That does not mean every such edit is inaccurate. Some changes may clarify responsibilities that were poorly described when a profile was first created, and AI-related work existed well before the current generative AI boom. The important distinction is whether the updated wording accurately reflects what the person actually did in that role. For UAE professionals, the research does not argue against keeping a profile current. The credibility issue is narrower: updates should accurately describe real responsibilities, skills and experience rather than rewriting older work to fit current hiring trends. Taken together, the findings point to a practical approach. Treat a professional profile as something that can be maintained over time rather than completed once and forgotten.
